SADI-S

The Single Anastomosis Duodenal-Ileal Bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy, known as SADI-S, is the newest procedure approved by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Although it resembles the BPD-DS, the SADI-S is simpler and quicker to perform due to its single surgical bowel connection.

How it Works

The procedure begins with the sleeve gastrectomy, creating a smaller, tube-shaped stomach. Next, the initial segment of the small intestine is cut just beyond the stomach. A loop of intestine, measured several feet from its end, is then connected to the stomach. This is the sole intestinal connection made during the operation. This procedure offers more weight loss than the gastric bypass but avoids the higher risk of ulcers and bowel obstruction that can be seen with that operation. This hybrid operation is gaining popularity and is now being covered by many insurances.

The Procedure

After surgery, when a patient eats, food travels through the pouch and directly into the latter part of the small intestine. There, it combines with digestive juices from the initial segment of the small intestine, allowing for plenty of absorption of vitamins and minerals to support healthy nutrition. This procedure not only promotes significant weight loss but also reduces hunger, increases feelings of fullness, and improves blood sugar control and diabetes management.
