Our Approach

Paving the way to a healthier life.

If you’ve been struggling to lose weight for years but just can’t seem to find a solution that works, Seger | MD is the expert team you’ve been looking for. Whether you want to lose 15 pounds or 150 pounds, you’ve come to the right place. Even if weight loss is not one of your goals,  but you just don’t feel well tired, achy, generally unhealthy Seger | MD can help with that too.

We treat unwanted weight gain and obesity as a disease, not a moral failing. We think about improving your overall health, setting you up for less disease, less inflammation, and a better quality of life.

Seger | MD has developed a comprehensive approach to the treatment of unwanted weight gain and obesity, frequently resulting in disease remission and prevention in addition to weight loss. At the center of our holistic approach to wellness and weight management are what we refer to as the 8 ELEMENTS OF HEALTH.

They are connected and overlapping and each interrelated element would look very different from one person to another—which is why we work hard to develop a personal, unique plan of care for every patient.

Nutrition

Health and wellness truly begin with what we put in our bodies. Our recommendations start with reducing the obvious “junk” in our daily diets and focusing more on quality protein, healthy fats, and more leafy greens and non-starchy vegetables. The fact is that most people in the US consume high amounts of highly refined/processed foods or “food-like” substances, which frequently include added sugars, starches, and chemicals.

Rather than focusing on a particular “diet”, we help patients learn how food interacts with their bodies, identifying foods that are nutrient dense, satisfying, affordable and attainable. We advocate for a healthy relationship with food that leads to a healthy weight, improved metabolic health, and reduced inflammation.

Physical Activity

You only get one body in your lifetime, which means you have to take care of maintenance and repair on a regular basis if you want it to serve you for your lifetime. You don’t get to trade it in for a newer model when it gets run down. Just as we tend to our homes and cars, we need to take care of our bodies! Utilizing our bodies to move not only helps us to get around and burn more calories but our muscle tissue is actually the largest endocrine tissue in the human body.

Our muscle tissue is what burns the most calories day in and day out. Sitting has become the new smoking and is associated with dramatic health risks. We’ve got to GET MOVING if we want to keep our metabolic processes in balance, maintain muscle tissue, and achieve the CALORIE DEFICIT that is necessary for weight loss. Aside from reducing disease burden and the risk of just about every medical disease out there, physical activity also acts to reduce inflammation and slow the aging process. Who doesn’t want that?!

Sleep

It’s difficult to emphasize how critical it is to have restful sleep on a regular basis. We know from research that sleep is when our bodies do all of their maintenance and repair work. The average adult requires 7-8 hours of good, restful sleep a night (some can get by with a little less and some require a bit more).

We will help evaluate your sleep and identify any concerns, then help you optimize the conditions and behaviors you can control to get better sleep.

Stress

Daily life produces so much stress these days! While some stress is normal and completely appropriate, chronically high levels of stress can be detrimental to our health, both physically and emotionally.

We help patients identify and address life stressors. We work together with patients to develop strategies for addressing these stressors, so that patients have a clearer path to achieving their weight loss and overall wellness goals.

Gut Microbiome

There are literally trillions of bacteria that live within our gastrointestinal tract, or gut. These bacteria play a crucial role in our immune system, helping us fight off infection, disease, and inflammation. Additionally, we now know that an intricate relationship exists between our gut and brain, with profound effects—just like with nutrition, these effects can be either favorable or detrimental.

Overfeeding on sugar and refined starches alters this gut bacteria, as do chemicals. While consuming fermented foods can help, many individuals do not do this on a regular basis or in sufficient quantities, so a good, high-quality probiotic is typically needed.

Hormones

Throughout life there is a fairly predictable ebb and flow of hormones in the human body that often leads to transformative changes. With the evolution of the science surrounding hormones, we now have the capacity to address hormone deficiencies to improve quality of life and health-span. While we would all like to live longer, Seger | MD believes what we would really like is to LIVE WELL longer.

Health and and safety is at the forefront of our approach, and we recognize that hormone replacement is not for everyone. With our program, we put safety first and consider all aspects of an individual’s medical history prior to making decisions regarding HRT.

Purpose

What do you do to feel valued and experience a sense of accomplishment? Whatever it is, we stress the importance of doing something meaningful TO YOU with your life. This doesn’t have to be what you get paid to do—it could be volunteer work you do in your community, service to your church, support to family members, or advocating for a particular social cause.

For many patients, practicing and cultivating a rich spiritual life is another important source of meaning and purpose. The bottom line is that feeling unfulfilled can open the door to negative emotions, depression, inactivity, and an unhealthy relationship with food.

“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

Community/Connectedness

Humans were meant to experience life together, with companions. We weren’t meant to live in isolation! This doesn’t mean you have to be an extrovert. It just means not trying to solve all of your problems on your own, not trying to meet every single need you have without help or support. Many of us are eager to lend a helping hand, but reluctant to accept a hand when we are in need ourselves.

Sharing your ideas and helping others is healthy, but so is knowing how to ask for help and support! Connections and support groups can be super helpful for those struggling with weight management.

Weight Management Program

Seger | MD has a weight loss program designed specifically for both teens and for adults!
Seger | MD’s Weight Loss Program is a comprehensive, holistic and innovative approach to help patients lose weight, improve their health and maintain their healthy weight goals through a combination of consultation, medical treatment and practical advice.
The initial progress fee includes the following:
  • New patient interactive online class led by Dr. Jenny
  • 2 comprehensive body composition analyses
  • Baseline EKG
  • Initial one on one visit with a thorough medical history and physical examination
  • Initial visit with one of our dedicated on-staff dietitians
Not typically. While meal replacements are part of a customized weight-loss routine for some patients, they are not universally used or recommended in our Weight Loss Program.
Initially, visits occur every month to ensure your weight loss goals are being met on time and safely. Once you begin to make your weight loss goals, your visits may become more spaced out though you will need to make periodic visits to our office to ensure that you are losing weight in a healthy and safe manner.
Yes! Seger | MD’s Weight Loss Program, though very comprehensive, does not take the place of a primary care provider.
Patients who actively engage in the program typically lose 15-25% of their starting body weight.
No! Compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide are NOT FDA-approved. Compounded versions of these medications are created by compounding pharmacies and do not have the same rigorous standards as other medical therapies.

Payments and Insurance

Partially. The initial payment for the program is paid directly, not through your insurance. Many insurance providers do not cover weight loss programs of any kind. Payment is due at the time of service.
For general patient visits, Seger | MD accepts the following:
  • Aetna
  • BlueCross BlueShield
  • Baseline EKG
  • Cigna
  • Humana
  • United Healthcare
Absolutely! Additionally, if a patient doesn’t have insurance, we have negotiated greatly reduced self-pay prices with several leading labs in the US.

General health services provided by Seger | MD are typically covered by FSA and HSA accounts. Please check with your provider for details about your coverage.

No. Anti-obesity medication is very rarely covered by insurance. Cash pay prices (when insurance does NOT cover Anti-Obesity Medicine) vary widely from as little as $15/month to as high as $1000/month for high doses of the GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide in their name brand forms only.

Common Questions

We totally get it. Many people have spent countless hours reading and learning and perhaps have even worked with nutritionists in the past. Seger | MD’s Weight Loss Program is designed with success in mind and is informed by decades of science, knowledge and experience.
By all means, more power to you. There are plenty of weight loss clinics that can provide you with a prescription, and little else. In our experience, most patients require a comprehensive approach that addresses ALL of the contributing factors that lead up to obesity.
